Girls soccer: Glenbrook South's late spurt sinks Warren

For a third straight year, Warren's girls soccer team found itself in the Glenbrook Cup final.

Last year it was a close call, as the Blue Devils fell to Glenbrook South in the second overtime of the title game.

This time around Warren was right there most of the way with the Titans, through the wind-driven rain - until a couple of late goals put some separation between the teams.

The best effort from an undermanned Warren team was not quite enough to keep it even with Glenbrook South in a 3-0 setback at the Techny Fields in Northbrook on Saturday afternoon.

"I'm really proud on how the girls played," said Warren coach Ryan McCabe. "We fought, worked hard and worked together. You couldn't ask for a better effort from any one of them. They all stepped up and did a great job all weekend."

The Blue Devils (10-7-1) played without three starters but still managed to win three of their four games in less than 24 hours.

"I thought the girls that were here did a fantastic job," McCabe said. "Glenbrook South has size, speed, skill. Any time you come up against that, it's going to be a long day. Our girls played well, but we didn't do ourselves many favors."

Glenbrook South (13-2-2) allowed just 1 goal in its 4 tournament matches.

The Titans' leading scorer, Olivia Peters, got an unassisted goal in the fifth minute.

Glenbrook South added two late insurance goals. Peters set up one in the 60th minute to Makayla Stadler, and Lily Sands had the other one five minutes later off an assist from Gabby Baldo.

The Titans have won the Glenbrook Cup for the sixth time in seven years in some tough weather conditions.

"This wasn't the ideal situation," Glenbrook South coach Seong Ha said. "It was hard for these girls to compete mentally or physically. It was a grind out there today. This wasn't the best of soccer and it was unfair for the girls to go through this. But it's a tournament, and you see what they can do and persevere."

Warren won its two games earlier in the day. The Blue Devils shut out Chicago University High 2-0. In the semifinals, the Blue Devils edged out Deerfield 1-0 in PKs, which Warren won 4-3.
