Central Illinois Mitsubishi plant sold to liquidation firm

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - A Mitsubishi plant in central Illinois that ended production last year has been sold to an auctioneering and liquidation firm.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/23gvAr8 ) that Maynards Industries will take possession of the property in Normal on June 1.

No terms were announced. Mitsubishi spokesman Dan Irvin says he doesn't know what Maynards is planning for the site. Officials with Maynards could not be reached for comment.

The sale ends the Japanese automaker's involvement in central Illinois. The plant was Mitsubishi's only manufacturing facility in the U.S.

The plant's assembly of the Outlander Sport ended in November. That was the last model built at the plant. About 1,200 employees were laid off.
