Woodlands Academy hosts Fine Arts Evening

Woodlands Academy to present music, artwork

An evening to enjoy student drawings, paintings, ceramics and photography exhibits, along with spring concert performances by the school's choirs and orchestra, is in store at Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart's annual Fine Arts Evening.

This free event will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 19, at the all-girl college-prep high school, 760 E. Westleigh Road, Lake Forest.

The evening will begin with a reception for the artists at 6 p.m., and will include the spring concert at 7 p.m.

The concert, in the Chapel of the Sacred Heart, will feature music performed at the District of Columbia competition in April 15-18 by the Microscope and Kaleidoscope choirs and Symphonic Orchestra. The orchestra will be joined by guest soloist organist Tim Mikolay from Sacred Heart Schools in Chicago, performing the first and third movements from the Organ Concerto No. 1 in C-Major by Franz Xaver Brixi.

This Baroque-era concerto is rarely performed or recorded. Choral concert highlights include a medley of Gershwin tunes.

The honors won by Woodlands Academy musicians at the WorldStrides festival include Gold awards for both choirs and the orchestra, as well as five of only 12 Maestro awards given in recognition of outstanding individual achievements during the event.

Woodlands Academy art students have also won recognition this year. Freshman Yuhan Bao of China was juried into the K-12 Exhibition during the National Council of Education for the Ceramic Arts' 50th annual conference March 16-19 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Senior Ellie Randolph of Lake Forest received the Mayoral Award for her photograph at the ReInvent Emerging Artist Exhibition sponsored by the Deer Path Art League.

In addition, Best of Show awards at The Woodlands Academy Fine Arts Exhibit, hosted by the Lake Forest Library and sponsored by the Deer Path Art League, went to sophomore Gillian Buckardt of Lake Forest, drawing; senior Elizabeth Franclemont of Zion, painting; senior Elena Gutierrez of Waukegan, ceramics; and senior Mary Hurtgen of Winnetka, photography.
