CLC recognizes students for academic excellence

More than 40 College of Lake County students received awards for outstanding academic performance at the Honors Convocation on April 22. And, at the Phi Theta Kappa induction ceremony on April 21, CLC's chapter welcomed 300 new members into the international honor society.

"The Honors Convocation is truly one of my favorite events during the academic year. The students really value and appreciate being recognized as outstanding scholars, and the honors convocation is an opportunity to celebrate our students' success," Dr. Rich Haney, provost, said.

Following Dr. Haney's address, faculty and staff announced the names of the individual winners from their respective academic programs. The total includes more than 20 students who received the Academic Excellence Award. Criteria vary among departments, based on high grade point average and a combination of leadership skills, perseverance, interest in the field and other factors.

CLC 2016 Academic Excellence Award recipients:

• Accounting: Bryan Bonato of Waukegan and Karen Chauvin of Gurnee.

• Administrative Office Systems: Justine Briggs of Antioch and Cheryl Mangold of Vernon Hills.

• Business Administration: Linda Starkey of Wauconda.

• Computer Information Technology: Christopher Bauer and Michael Curry of Grayslake.

• Criminal Justice: Brian Bradel of Libertyville.

• Fire Science Technology: John Kelly of Skokie.

• Health Information Technology (Edna K. Huffman Scholarship Award): Michael Mertz of Buffalo Grove.

• Hospitality and Culinary Management: Christine Heckmann of Island Lake, Connor McNeil of Waukegan, Jovahnny Montes De Oca Hernandez of Vernon Hills and Stephanie Sagerman of Long Grove.

• Human Services: Jennifer Saye of Lake Villa.

• Paralegal Studies: Sean Bourke of McHenry, Amy Felton Brown of Libertyville, Heather Marlier of Antioch, Mimi Mitchell of Gurnee, Christina Pearson of Round Lake, Reneé Sanderson of Ringwood and Angela Truesdale of Wauconda.

• Social Sciences (Frederick M. Patterson Award): Mary Grace Garin Juance of Round Lake.

In addition to the Academic Excellence Award winners, the recipients of the other awards include the following:

• CLC Federation of Teachers Perseverance Award: Carina Delevega of Libertyville and Mason Hoy of Ingleside.

• CLC Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship Award: Ansuman Mishra of Gurnee and Isabella Pereira of Long Grove.

• Cooperative Education Student of the Year: Lydia Trusty of Lindenhurst.

• Excellence in Forensics Award: Ryan Haass of Vernon Hills and Emily Ogg of Winthrop Harbor.

• Honors Scholar medals: Betty Derza of Round Lake, Connor Mallon of Grayslake, Hannah Cassiday of Spring Grove, Hannah Urban of Lindenhurst and Kari Ortegel of Ingleside.

• International Student Achievement Award: Javier Lara Cartagena of Mundelein.

• Internship Student of the Year: Denval Hogg of Waukegan.

• Phi Theta Kappa All-Illinois Academic Team Award: Cristian Carillo and Rachel Le of Gurnee.

• Phoebe Boyd Art Scholarship: Geovanni Gonzalez of Highwood.

• Wilmot Prize for Excellence in Mathematics: Oscar Araiza Bravo of Mundelein.

Additionally, two students, Ron Ballok of Waukegan and Christiane Laskowski of Lake Zurich, received Lake County Art League scholarships, and two, Michele Kolf of Grayslake and Andrew Spahn of Round Lake, received honorable mentions.

Among all CLC students completing at least 45 credit hours, with a minimum of six credit hours completed in 2015, 85 students received Outstanding Scholar Awards for maintaining a 4.0 grade point average, and 248 students received Certificates of Academic Distinction for attaining a GPA between 3.75 and 3.99, Dr. Haney noted.

In addition, 300 students were recently welcomed into CLC's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. Students are invited to participate after achieving a 3.5 GPA after taking 12 credit hours at CLC.

Thirty new members were recognized at the April 21 ceremony. In addition to Phi Theta Kappa, the college offers an Honors Program and the CLC Scholar Program.
