Centro de Información to honor two at annual luncheon May 6

On Friday, May 6, Centro de Información will be celebrating its annual Community Day Luncheon at 11:30 a.m. at the Elgin Country Club.

Two individuals will be honored for their contributions to Centro de Información and the Hispanic community.

They are: Al Ramirez, who has been on the board of directors for many years and has recently resigned; and José Ares, who retired this past year and had been the coordinator of Outreach Services for many years.

The guest speaker for the event will be Oscar Chacón. He is a co-founder and executive director of Alianza Americas (formerly known as National Alliance of Latin American & Caribbean Communities NALACC), an umbrella of immigrant-led and immigrant serving organizations based in the United States, dedicated to improving the quality of life of Latino immigrant communities in the U.S., as well as of peoples throughout the Americas. Prior to his designation in 2007 in his current role, Chacón served in leadership positions at the Chicago-based Heartland Alliance for Human Needs and Human Rights, the Northern California Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, the Boston-based Centro Presente, and several other community based and international development organizations. He also has served in multiple advisory committees to national and international processes including the Civil Society Consultation process associated to the Global Forum on Migration and Development and the World Social Forum on Migration. Chacón is a frequent national and international spokesperson on transnationalism, economic justice, the link between migration and development, migrant's integration processes, human mobility, migration policies, racism and xenophobia, as well as U.S. Latino community issues.

Centro de Información is a social service agency that has been serving the community for 44 years with offices in Elgin, Carpentersville and Hanover Park. It began in 1972 as an outreach mission of the United Methodist Church and the Catholic Archdiocese of Rockford. Centro started in borrowed space open once a week to provide information, advocacy and referrals for the then 5,000 Hispanics in the area.
