Cougars pound Dragons 9-0

DAYTON, Ohio - The Kane County Cougars' (11-8) offense did not waste the 4 errors committed by the Dayton Dragons (5-15) as they took the second game of the series 9-0 from Fifth Third Field in Dayton, Ohio.

The Cougars jumped out to a 4-0 lead as the Dragons coughed up 3 errors in the first. Trevor Mitsui led off the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Matt McPhearson, before Luke Lowery singled home Zach Nehrir. Two batters later, Galli Cribbs kept the line moving with a 2-run single with the bases loaded.

Before Justin Donatella (3-0) could even take the mound he was backed with a 4-run lead. The right-hander stayed comfortable on the mound as he pitched 6 shutout innings, allowing just 3 hits and striking out 6 Dragons. Donatella earned his third quality start of the season in just four appearances.

The Cougars offense continued throughout the ballgame. Mitsui's RBI single in the second was the final run given up by Dayton starter Jake Johnson (0-2). The Cougars tacked on runs in the fourth, eighth and ninth innings thanks to another run-scoring hit from Mitsui, and RBI fielder's choice from Jose Queliz and a single from Cribbs to bring home Lowery.

Every Cougar batter in the lineup either scored or drove in a run in Wednesday night's game.

The bullpen followed up Donatella's night with nearly three perfect innings. Brody Greer, Jared Miller and Keegan Long all kept the Dragons scoreless combining for three strikeouts to end the game.

The series between the Cougars and Dragons concludes on Thursday night with Major League rehabber Anthony DeSclafini pitching for Dayton against the Cougars' Junior Garcia (1-1, 4.15). First pitch from Dayton is scheduled for 6 p.m. Coverage can be heard on AM 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com beginning at 5:45 p.m.
