Water Meter Reading System Replacement Program Begins in Schaumburg

This May, the Village of Schaumburg will begin a multi-year program to upgrade its water meter reading system - an initiative that will help ensure uninterrupted meter reading throughout the village.

As part of the program, existing water meter transmission units (MTU) located on properties will require replacement. In some cases, water meters may also need to be replaced. Approximately 950 water meters and 26,500 MTUs will be replaced over the next three years for a total project cost of $4.67 million. The new water metering equipment will be installed at no additional cost to Schaumburg residents.

The village has contracted with Water Resources, Inc., and its affiliated company, Water Services Company, to install the new water metering equipment, which requires access to residential and commercial properties.

"The village has budgeted this ongoing project into the Capital Improvement Plan and we will work with our contractor, Water Resources, to reach out to residents and businesses to complete the necessary replacement of equipment," said Engineering & Public Works Department Director David Lawry. "It will be important that we work together with residents and businesses to get installation appointments scheduled so that we can create a seamless transition to the new equipment."

Water Resources will be mailing letters urging residents to call them to schedule an appointment. A map on the village's website at http://bit.ly/1MkF9Tm indicates what areas will be scheduled for improvement for each year. Appointments will only be scheduled for those residents who have received letters. Representatives can be reached 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. Callers unable to reach someone are advised to leave a message with their name, address, telephone number and a time that is best for their call to be returned.

A typical installation takes approximately 30-40 minutes. Contractors will have a village-issued ID badge to identify themselves. A person over the age of 18 years old must be present during the installation. Water service will only be turned off if a property requires replacement of the existing water meter along with the installation of the new MTU.

More information about preparing for the installation appointment and what to expect, can be found on the village's website at http://bit.ly/1MkF9Tm. Those with questions regarding the program may contact Brian Wagner at bwagner@villageofschaumburg.com or dial 311 in Schaumburg.
