Boys water polo: Wheeling's back in MSL title game
Wheeling repeated the feat.
The Wildcats' boys water polo team will represent the East Division in the Mid-Suburban League championship game for a second straight year.
Entering the final day of league play, Wheeling needed a victory over Buffalo Grove in order to assure itself of a spot against Fremd in the MSL title matchup.
The Wildcats and coach Rudy Means got what they were after, in the form of a 10-3 decision against the visiting Bison.
Nate Reiff led the way with 6 goals, and Jake Noel (2), Kyle Noel (1) and Jorge Figueroa (1) also scored for Wheeling (17-8, 9-1).
Buffalo Grove (13-10, 7-2-1) wrapped up a second-place finish in the East under coach Scott Kapecky. The Bison got 2 goals from Ryan Lawson and 1 from Eid Shathatit.
• Rolling Meadows improved to 6-11 overall and 3-6-1 in the East with a 5-4 victory over Elk Grove (6-12, 2-8).
Michael Dellorto scored twice for the Mustangs, and David Dragne did likewise for the Grens.
• Junior goalie Tim Bansfield had 7 saves as St. Viator picked up a 10-7 victory over Vernon Hills in a nonconference matchup. Senior Mitchell Warren and Dante Cerone had 3 goals apiece for the Lions, Michael Ruben scored twice and seniors Michael Baker and Ethan Johnson scored 1 each.
• Brendan Atwood and Richie Sevic each scored 3 goals to help Maine West to a 9-6 victory over Lane Tech in a nonconference matchup. The Warriors (11-6) got a goal and 3 steals from Andre Krivokapich along with 6 saves from deep-end goalie Sam Ure.
Girls polo
Isabella Rojas had 4 goals and Andrea Potgeiter scored 3 to help the Fillies to 15-8 victory over Metea Valley in nonconference action.
Mia Latimer, Nicole Runtz and Alyssa Schmidts had 2 goals apiece for the Fillies and goalie Ellie Connors stopped 8 shots and came up with 8 assists.
• Lilly Lawrin (3 goals, 3 assists, 3 steals) and Alyssa Rosenorn (1 goal, 4 assists, 6 steals) set the tone as Elk Grove handled Maine East 9-2 in a nonconference matchup. Lindsey Hendren (2 goals, 6 steals), Hannah Sallenback (1 goals 6 steals) and goalie Jessica Deering (12 saves) also had big games for the Grens (9-13).
• Sam Wooley scored 6 goals for the second straight day as Conant rolled to an 11-4 victory over St. Charles North in a nonconference matchup. Cam Rosas made 15 saves for the Cougars (15-11), and Wooley made 3 steals and generated 3 ejections.
