Man accused of threatening to kill Geneva police officers

A 45-year-old man with a long arrest record is being held on $100,000 bail after his arrest on charges of threatening to kill two Geneva police officers responding to a disturbance he's accused of causing.

William J. Taber, who is homeless, has been charged threatening a public official, a felony, and misdemeanor disorderly conduct, according to a Geneva police report and Kane County court records.

Police responded about 9 a.m. Friday to the Geneva Eye Clinic, 1000 S. Randall Road, because employees there were alarmed and disturbed by Taber, according to a Geneva police report.

After Taber was cuffed, he continued to swear at police and spit on the squad car passenger door and window cage on the way to the station, the report said. Exactly what threats Taber is accused of making toward police officers were redacted from the police report, but court records indicate Taber threatened to kill both responding officers.

According to Kane County court records, Taber has had numerous arrests for trespassing and disorderly conduct. He also has felony charges pending from an August 2014 arrest on a felony charge of filing a false police report.

On April 18, Taber was found unfit to stand trial on that charge and an evaluation by the Illinois Department of Human Services was recommended, as well as a treatment plan, before he was due back in court on June 9.

He also has been charged with leaving a "lewd" voice mail for a female Geneva Police Department employee in December 2014, harassing other Geneva police department employee via phone in March 2015 and February 2016, according to court records.

Taber is next due in court on Thursday. He faces up anywhere from probation to up to five years in prison if convicted on felony charges.
