Wauconda High student earns Evans Scholars Foundation scholarship

Lexi Meyer has always had big dreams for her future.

But the recession in 2008 hit her family hard. Between job challenges and health issues, the family began to struggle financially each month. And Lexi, too, felt the stress.

"I constantly worry about having enough money to support myself and wonder if my brother will be able to go to school and if my parents will ever be able to retire," she said. "However, all of these stresses have helped shape me into the person I am today."

Her dedication and work ethic have resulted in being awarded a full housing and tuition scholarship to college, the result of a summer job caddying at Wynstone Golf Club in North Barrington.

A recipient of the Evans Scholarship for golf caddies, Lexi, who is from Port Barrington, will attend Indiana University this fall. She plans to study biology and eventually would like to attend medical school in hopes of becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

Currently a senior at Wauconda High School, Lexi is involved in numerous activities, including cheerleading, track and field and student council.

"Being a caddie, I have made (possible future professional) connections and developed my people skills," she said. "This will benefit me my entire life. I am a very self-motivated person and believe I can achieve anything I set my mind to."

Evans Scholars are chosen based on demonstrating a strong caddie record, excellent academics, financial need and outstanding leadership and character. The scholarship is valued at more than $80,000 over four years. A full list of 260 new Scholars, who will begin college this fall, will be released in May.

"Each of our deserving Scholars epitomizes what our program has been about since its creation in 1930," said WGA Chairman David Robinson. "Their dedication, hard work and sacrifice is inspiring, and we are honored to be able to help them pursue their dreams."

The Western Golf Association, headquartered in Golf, Illinois, has supported the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930. One of golf's favorite charities, it is the nation's largest scholarship program for caddies.

Currently, 910 caddies are enrolled in 19 colleges across the nation as Evans Scholars, and more than 10,000 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the Program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles "Chick" Evans Jr.

"Based on her excellence in the classroom and her service to her school and community, there is little doubt that Lexi has earned this life-changing opportunity," WGA President and CEO John Kaczkowski said. "We welcome her to the Evans Scholars family."

Scholarship funds come mostly from contributions by 28,700 golfers across the country, who are members of the WGA Par Club program. Evans Scholars Alumni donate more than $11 million annually, and all proceeds from the BMW Championship, the third of four PGA TOUR Playoff events in the PGA TOUR's FedExCup competition, are donated to the Evans Scholars Foundation.
