Two Batavia girls earn Girl Scout Gold Awards

Girls Scouts of Northern Illinois is pleased to announce that Batavia residents Amanda Rice, 19, and Samantha Walter, 18, will receive their Gold Awards from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday, May 6, during a Girl Scout community event at Funway Family Fun Center, 1335 S. River St. in Batavia. The event will include an awards program and plenty of family skating and fun for all ages.

Amanda's Gold Award project, "Project Harmony," brought a series of string quartet concerts to residents of an assisted living facility. Amanda herself is a cellist and played as a member of the performing quartet. She is wrapping up her first year of college at Iowa State University. Her Batavia high school classmate has continued Project Harmony providing sustainability to the project - a key component of Gold Award qualification.

Samantha earned her Gold Award by founding, "Roamin' with the Classics," which included starting a high school literature and Latin club, information website, and outreach initiative to build an appreciation of classic literature and Latin in her community.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award in Girl Scouting. Girls who pursue their Gold Award aspire to transform an idea and vision for change into an actionable plan with measurable, sustainable, and far-reaching results. Girl Scouts has been acknowledging the outstanding contributions of its members for 100 years. 2016 marks the centennial celebration of the Gold Award.

The Girl Scout Research Institute found that 99 percent of Gold Award recipients say belonging to Girl Scouts has positively impacted their life; 81 percent of Gold Award recipients think of themselves as a leader; 84 percent feel they have had success in leadership; and 90 percent attribute their success in life to Girl Scouts.
