Second time is the charm for Bartlett spending plan

The Bartlett village board approved a $53.6 million budget for the spending year that begins Sunday.

The board took a successful second crack at passing the budget April 19. The proposal failed earlier this month after it didn't get the five 'yes' votes needed from the seven-member board to pass.

The approved budget is about 13 percent lower than last year's $61.8 million plan.

Bartlett Finance Director Jeff Martynowicz said earlier this month the village will save money by leaving five vacant positions open. The village will also put off installing a new phone system that would cost about $250,000 and hold off on purchasing new village vehicles.

Before the budget was passed, trustees approved adding $19,500 to the plan for an electronic sign to be used by the police department and for the village's Kickstand Classic bicycle race.

Trustee Adam Hopkins originally cited concerns the budget taxed Bartlett residents living in Cook County twice for mosquito abatement. He was the lone "no" vote last week.
