Softball: Thomsen bats, pitches Elk Grove to win

Elk Grove's Kylie Thomsen was on her game, both in the circle and the batter's box on Wednesday.

The junior right-hander (4-1) tossed a 5-hitter with 9 strikeouts and no walks.

She also belted 3-run and 2-run homers along with a double for 6 RBI as the host Grens posted a 13-2, six-inning victory over Buffalo Grove (2-10, 0-5) in the Mid-Suburban East softball game.

Senior teammate Sarah Pauscher (2-for-2, 2 walks) also homered for the sixth straight game and seventh time of the season.

Other top hitters for the MSL East-leading Grens (11-1, 4-1) were Haley Itzenthaler (2-for-4), Alex Masnica (2-for-4), Anna Bonder (2-for-3) and Abbey Sloan (2-for-3).

Hersey 11, Prospect 8: Hannah Graff (3-for-3), Makayla Tsagalis (2-for-4), Katie Wingerter (2-for-4), Kaitlyn Denten (2-for-4) and Kim Labahn (2-for-4) led the offense for host Hersey (6-5, 3-2) in the MSL East matchup.

Remy Gerew and Denten each doubled for the Huskies. Freshman Sarah Bailitz earned the win.

Lauren Caldrone (3-for-5), Colleen Palczynski (2-for-4), Cate Meersman (2-for-4) and Jennifer Srickland (double) paced the offense for Prospect (2-8, 0-5).

Schaumburg 13, Palatine 2 (5 inn): Winning pitcher Michelle Birkholz (3-1) belted a grand slam and teammate Paige Alt had a 2-run homer as Schaumburg (8-4, 4-1) remained 1 game out of first place in the MSL West, where Palatine (3-8 overall) stands at (3-3).

Alt, Natalie Napier and Christina Candotti each had multiple hits for the Saxons, who visit Barrington today.

Fremd 20, Hoffman Est. 0 (5 inn.): Fremd senior Julia Wacker (3-for 3, 7 RBI) belted a home run and 2 doubles for 7 RBI as the Vikings (14-0, 5-0) remained tied for first in the MSL West with Conant.

Other top hitters for Fremd were Reagan Schneider (3-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Alyssa Garcia (2-for-4, 3 runs), AnnMarie O'Sullivan (2-for-2, 3 RBI, 2 runs), Jessica Mazur (2-for-2, 3 RBI, 1 run) and Becca Uhrich (1-for-1) who belted a homer and had 3 RBI. Lexi D'Ambrosio also doubled for Fremd against the visiting Hawks (5-6, 2-3).

Winning pitcher Nikki Kehoe (10-0) and Hannah Ban combined for a 1-hitter.

Kehoe struck out three in the first three innings, giving up 1 hit to Mary Bean. Ban struck out one in the final two innings.

Rolling Meadows 10, Wheeling 0 (5 inn.): Junior Lydia Schultz struck out 10 and threw a 2-hitter for host Meadows (9-5, 2-3).

Sara Benner (1-for-3) had a 2-run homer for Meadows in the first inning, her third is as many games, and fourth of the season.

Amanda Elkins (2-for-4, double), Mallory King (2-for-3, double, RBI), and Caroline Slowik (2-for-2, double) were multiple hitters for the Mustangs while teammates Elizabeth Elkins and Paige Connor also had doubles.

Christie Ambrose (2-for-2) had both of the hits for Wheeling (0-7, 0-5).

St. Francis 11, St. Viator 2: Grace Kaiser and Meg Naughton drove St. Viator's 2 runs. Cam VanValkenburg and Catherine Hafner had the other hits for the host Lions.
