Girls water polo: Prospect wraps up MSL East; Fremd clinches tie in West

Prospect's girls water polo team clinched an outright Mid-Suburban East championship on Wednesday with an 8-4 victory over visiting Elk Grove.

Faye Barry and Ann Fulk scored twice to lead the scoring effort for the Knights (12-8, 8-1), who will represent the division in the MSL championship game on Thursday, May 5. It will be Prospect's first appearance in the title game since 2012.

Knights coach Natalie Tucker credits her players' selfless approach for the group's success.

"When teams counter our top shooters, their teammates are ready and willing to step in," Tucker said. "There are no prima donnas on our team, and everyone steps up to make each other better. Our tenacity has allowed us to overcome some really great teams in the East."

Senior goal Lauren Broz stopped 9 shots for Prospect.

Lilly Lawrin scored twice for Elk Grove (8-12, 3-6).

Fremd 11, Schaumburg 3: The Vikings clinched at least a tie for the Mid-Suburban West title by improving to 17-4 overall and 8-1 in the division.

Sarah Coombes (4 goals), Becca Rutkowski (3) and Paulin Pappas (2) led the scoring effort for Fremd.

Rebecca Kasner (2 goals) and Hannah Pearson (1) had the scores for Schaumburg (6-12, 2-7), which was denied on 16 attempts by Fremd goalie Emma Jeronimus.

The Vikings have an opportunity to clinch an outright MSL West championshp with a victory at Hoffman Estates on Monday.

Rolling Meadow 3, Buffalo Grove 2: Betsy Zanocco stopped 15 shots and Anna Frantom, Emily Walters and Maggie Goodwin scored the goals as the Mustangs improved to 16-6 overall and 6-3 in the MSL East.

Barrington 5, Palatine 4: The Fillies withstood a late Pirates rally to remain in second place in the Mid-Suburban West with one game left.

Andrea Potgieter and Alyssa Schmidts scored 2 goals each for Barrington (15-3, 7-2), and goalie Ellie Connors made 6 saves.

Palatine (11-11, 5-4), which outscored Barrington 3-1 in the fourth quarter after going scoreless in the middle two periods, got 1 goal each from Mathilde Mogensen, Tess O'Brien, Kristin Anderson and Jasmina Mesic.

Conant 13, Hoffman Estates 2: Sam Wooley scored a game-high 8 goals, Paulina Chowaniec had 3 and goalie Cam Rosas stopped 13 shots as the visiting Cougars (13-10, 5-4) picked up an MSL West win.
