Softball: Huntley upends McHenry; Zdroik has big day for St. Edward

A fielder's choice groundout by Haley O'Mara scored Jessica Shields with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday as Huntley's softball team notched an 8-7 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win over McHenry.

Shields led off the inning with a single and went to third on a bunt by winning pitcher Tiffany Giese.

Huntley (7-4, 2-0) was down 6-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Red Raiders scored 7 runs, highlighted by a grand slam home run from Riley Porretto.

Sofia Tenuta was 3-for-4 for Huntley with 2 doubles and an RBI, Megan Baczewski had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBI and Giese was 3-for-4. She also struck out 8 and walked just 1 in earning the win.

St. Edward 12, Riverside-Brookfield 1: In the Metro Suburban West, Lindsay Zdroik was 3-for-3 with a home run, 2 doubles and 6 RBI to lead the Green Wave (8-3, 3-1) to the win. Sarah Mendoza (2 hits), Allison Stratman (2B), Mallory Rejman (2B, 2 RBI) and Jackie Boyston (2 RBI) also contributed to the offense. Zdroik was the winning pitcher, allowing just 2 hits with 6 strikeouts and no walks.

Geneva 12, Streamwood 0: In the Upstate Eight River, Alissa Dierks threw a 3-hitter with 9 strikeouts and no walks to lead the Vikings (10-4, 6-2). Molly Wrenn had 3 hits and 3 RBI for Geneva, Annika Radabaugh hit a home run, Katelyn Keller had 3 hits with 2 doubles and Emily Plocinski had a double and 3 RBI. Jessica Daley had a double for Streamwood (4-6, 1-3).

Bartlett 12, Metea Valley 1: Taylor Rotondo had 2 hits with a double and 4 RBI to lead Bartlett (9-4) to this nonconference win. Nina Pavell (RBI) and Elyse Hickey added doubles for the Hawks. Danielle Kirby was the winning pitcher, allowing no hits in 3 innings before giving way to Amber Pagan to finish.

South Elgin 3, Palatine 2: Stacy Bellack drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Storm (5-11) to a nonconference win. Alexa Rogalla had 2 hits with a triple and an RBI for South Elgin and Hannah Gordon added a double. Geneva Pollman pitched a complete game for the win.

St. Charles East 10, West Chicago 0: Winning pitcher Delaney Devor, who allowed just 2 hits, had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBI for the Saints (12-1, 5-1) in this Upstate Eight win. Megan Daley, Katie Kolb and Jordan Hieber (3 RBI) also had doubles for SCE.

Cary-Grove 13, Hampshire 1: Brianne Prank had 3 hits with a triple and 2 RBI for Cary-Grove (5-7, 3-3) in this Fox Valley Conference win. Alyssa Gurgone (2 hits, RBI), Emma Hill (2 hits, 2B, 3 RBI), Taryn Ladd (2B) and Sam Wageman (2 hits, 2B, RBI) also contributed. Hill was the winning pitcher, allowing just 1 hit with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk in 5 innings.

Rosary 6, DeLaSalle 4: Riley Mccue had 2 hits with a double and Xandria Olsen 2 RBI for Rosary (3-8, 2-2) in the GCAC. Aubrey Fisher added a double for the Royals. Sarah Willman was the winning pitcher, allowing 7 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Burlington Central 17, North Boone 1: In the Big Northern East, Gretchen Schrubbe was 4-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI and Emily Kisch 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Rockets (12-3, 5-1). Winning pitcher Ashley Ratliff had 2 hits and an RBI, Jill Neisendorf was 3-for-3 with a double and 3 EBI and Sarah Kinney had 2 RBI.

Wheaton Academy 9, ACC 6: Dani Brown had 3 hits and losing pitcher Paige Miller added 2 hits with a triple and an RBI for Aurora Central (9-8) in this Metro Suburban loss. Tressa Cwinski had 2 RBI for the Chargers.

Marian Central 5, CL South 4: Samantha Burgard had 3 hits for Crystal Lake South in this nonconference game. Christina Toniolo was the losing pitcher.

Westminster Christian 19, IMSA 4: Drew Randazzo was 5-for-5 with a double and an RBI and Taryn Boltz went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI to lead the Warriors (1-7, 1-3) to a Northeastern Athletic Conference win. Rachel Schmitt had 2 hits with a double and an RBI for Westminster while Grace Schmitt had 2 hits with a double and 2 RBI and Becca Fugiel added 2 hits with a double and 2 RBI. Kristen Mason posted the win in the circle, going 4 innings allowing 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and no walks.
