Music notes: Metropolis presents two nights of WAR

Legacy of WAR

California's legendary funk-rock band WAR has been writing hits since the late '60s. In recent years, the band's music has been making nostalgic connections, but the current lineup recorded an album of new music: 2014's “Evolution.” Catch WAR when they bring classics like “Low Rider” and “Why Can't We Be Friends” to Arlington Heights' Metropolis this weekend. 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 22-23, at the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 W. Campbell St., Arlington Heights. $65; $75 for stage tables. (847) 577-2121 or metropolisarts.com.

The call of Colours

It all starts as a soulful '60s psychedelic jam fest that cries out for a blanket to sit on. But when the lads from Secret Colours turn on the Brit-pop harmonies and indie grooves, the sound takes on an intriguing urgency. The fivesome, with ties to Elmhurst, Geneva and Batavia, just returned from Austin, where they recorded their upcoming fourth album, which promises to lead to a busy summer of shows. If you haven't already, get started on your Secret Colours fandom when they play Lombard's Brauerhouse. 9 p.m. Friday, April 22, at Brauerhouse, 1000 N. Rohlwing Road, Lombard. $8-$10. (630) 495-2141 or brauerhouse.com.

David Paige: Are you ready?

The recent resurgence of '80s-styled pop set the stage for Arlington Heights' David Paige's 2014 EP, “Inside Out,” which effortlessly balances hints of that era's classics through his expressive vocals with the guitar-driven angst of '90s alternative rock hits. The title track strongly channels the helplessness one feels when baring one's soul, peppered with a few slight snarls, plenty of energy and even a callback to The Animals' “Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood.” It was a gutsy move, and one that in lesser hands would have felt like jarring camp, but Paige and his band earn it. They kick off an upcoming tour at the Elbo Room with Victory Dance and DayRollers Saturday. 8 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at Elbo Room, 2871 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago. $9. (773) 549-5549 or elboroomlive.com.

Take a picture

Filter's breakout “Hey Man Nice Shot” may have hit the airwaves nearly two decades ago, but it was their sophomore release, 1999's “Title of Record,” that still fuels my road trips down memory lane. Critical reviews of last week's release, “Crazy Eyes,” promise a return to form for a band that thrived most when railing against the world. Hear some of Filter's new music at Arlington Heights' H.O.M.E. Bar with the “Make America Hate Again” tour, featuring Orgy, Vampires Everywhere, Death Valley High and Lake County rockers Greywall. H.O.M.E. Bar, 1227 N. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. $22; VIP packages available. (847) 577-4663 or homebarchicago.com. 6 p.m. Thursday, April 21

The Rev at Nellie's

The Reverend Horton Heat has been playing country-tinged rockabilly music since busting out of Dallas in the mid-1980s. Then came the '90s, when the music scene was awash in a buzzy new blend of rock, enhanced with big band brass, ska rhythms and punk rock sensibilities, which essentially put out a welcome mat for some of the band's biggest hits. The Reverend Horton Heat brings the psychobilly theatrics to Palatine's Durty Nellie's along with comedic country artist Unknown Hinson. Durty Nellie's, 180 N. Smith St., Palatine. $22-$25. (847) 358-9150 or durtynellies.com. 9 p.m. Thursday, April 21
