Hoffman Estates man charged with sixth DUI

A Hoffman Estates man with five convictions for drunken driving was charged with his sixth DUI and ordered held on $100,000 bail Tuesday.

Jose Cruz, 53, faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutors say Elk Grove Village officers observed Cruz make an improper left turn at the intersection of Elmhurst and Higgins roads at 2:39 a.m. April 3. The officers followed the car to the intersection of Landmeier and Higgins roads, where they stopped Cruz, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Alyssa Grissom.

According to police, Cruz had bloodshot, glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol. He failed field sobriety tests and refused a breath test, Grissom said.

Cruz next appears in court on April 28.
