Softball: Barrington edges visiting Hersey

Abbey Jacobsen's one-out RBI single which scored Haley Luczak in the bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the difference in Barrington's 2-1 triumph over visiting Hersey on Monday.

The Mid-Suburban League softball opener at the Fields of Dreams was tied at 1-1 after one inning.

Hersey jumped in front on an RBI single by Jackie Bednar (2-for-3) before Barrington received a two-out homer from catcher Rachel Macdonald (her second of the season).

Hersey (2-3, 0-1) also received hits from Katie Wingerter, Mikayla Tsagalis, Kaitlyn Denten and Kim Labahn.

Kelly Katis and Carly Kordich collected singles for the Fillies (8-1), whose pitcher Catherine McMahon improved to 7-1.

Barrington senior Annie Leiding entered the game in the second inning for injured Jamie Brown.

Leiding contributed a walk, sacrifice bunt and solid defense in right field. "Annie did a super job coming off the bench for us," said Barrington coach Perry Peterson.

Elk Grove 4, Palatine 2: Anna Bonder's RBI single gave the visiting Grens a 4-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning.

Sarah Pauscher had an RBI double in the first and Alex Masnica an RBI single in the fifth for Elk Grove's other runs in the MSL opener.

Multiple hitters for EG (5-0, 1-0) were Haley Itzenthaler (2-for-4) and Abbey Sloan (2-for-3),.

Junior Kylie Thomsen (2-0) notched the win with a 6-hitter, 8 strikeout and 1 walk.

Freshman Grace Huff went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and run while raising her batting average to .533.

Pitcher Sarah Grossman went 1-for-3 with a double for the Pirates (0-5, 0-1)

Hoffman Estates 6, Wheeling 5: Trailing 5-4, host Hoffman (3-3, 1-0) scored 2 runs without making an out in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the MSL win.

Mary Bean (2-for-4) led off with a single and stolen base. Giselle Velazquez (2-for-4) followed with a single before Brynn Conelly's fielder's choice tied the game at 5-5 as Bean raced home.

Jordan Fera (3-for-4, 2 RBI) then produced the game winning single to right-center, scoring Velazquez.

Jackie Folmar had a double for the Hawks, whose winning pitcher was junior Megan Amato (2-1). She struck out seven in the last four innings. Connelly went the first three, striking out four.

Freshman Nicole Ferraro (2-for-4, double) and senior Abby Greenspan (2-for-4) led the offense for Wheeling (0-1, 0-1).

Schaumburg 8, Prospect 1: Host Schaumburg (2-3 1-0) opened defense of its MSL West title with pitcher Paige Alt (2-2) notching the win with 11 strikeouts and going 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.

Other top hitters for the Saxons were Christina Candotti (3-for-3, triple, RBI), Brittney Butt (2-for-4, double 3 RBI) and Janalee Lyke (2-for-3, RBI). Michelle Birkholz (double) and Sarah Schwind also had hits for the Saxons.

Alyssa Cacini (double), Jackie Orel, Colleen Palczynski and Aly Makuch had hits for Prospect (1-3, 0-1).

Conant 11, Rolling Meadows 6: Host Conant (3-0, 1-0) rallied from a 5-0 deficit as senior pitcher and St. Leo University recruit Sara Neuman threw the final five innings with 10 strikeouts and 2 hits to earn the win.

Top hitters for the Cougars were sophomore Jackie Burchfield (3-for-4, 3 runs RBI), junior Carly Rossdeutcher (3-for-4, home run, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and sophomore Sydney Correa (3-for-4, double 2 runs, RBI) and sophomore Makenna McCarthy (2-for-4, 2 RBI, 1 run). Morgan Bihun also doubled fro the winners.

Mallory King (2-for-3, double) and Elizabeth Elkins (2-for-3, 1 run) were multiple hitters for Meadows (6-1, 0-1) which received a home run from Amanda Elkins.

St. Viator 15, Glenbrook South 6: Winning pitcher Meg Naughton scattered 9 hits and struck out three for her second win of the season as the host Lions improved to 4-3.

Naughton was the beneficiary of a 7-run third inning which started on singles by Jenna Breslin (2 hits), Olivia Michalik (2 hits) and Naughton.

One out later, Haley Robinson battled back from an 0-2 count and belted a double to clear the bases.

Aryana Ziakas followed with another double to score Robinson. Ziakas scored on a fielder's choice by Cam VanValkenburg who also had 2 hits.

With two outs and nobody on, Catherine Hafner (3 RBI) and Grace Kaiser (3 hits) each singled before Breslin ended the scoring by doubling in 2 runs.

Leyden 14, Maine West 0: (5 inn): Kendall Duwall earned the win and had 2 doubles for the host Eagles who also received 3 hits from Carly Culotta 2 from Jodi DuBrock (double). Tara Mackey also doubled for Leyden.

Monica Liwag (double), Gabriella Demma, Allison Tworek and Nicole Byerly had hits for the Warriors.
