Rosemont police arrest Chicago man for 4th DUI

A man with multiple drunken driving arrests was charged in Rosemont with his fourth DUI and ordered held on $90,000 bail Monday.

Raul Rojas, 56, faces up to seven years in prison if he's convicted of the non-probationable, class-two felony offense.

Rosemont officers reported they observed Rojas at about 3:15 a.m. Saturday swerving in his lane and driving 15 mph in a 40 mph zone in the 9400 block of Higgins Road, said Cook County assistant state's attorney David Mennie.

Officers stopped the vehicle and noticed Rojas had bloodshot eyes and smelled strongly of alcohol, Mennie said. Rojas failed sobriety tests and was unable to perform the field breath test. He refused to perform a breath test at the police station, Mennie said.

Rojas' criminal background includes a DUI conviction in Illinois in 2009 for which he received 30 months in prison. He was sentenced to two years in prison following a 2008 conviction for aggravated battery, also in Illinois, where he was convicted four times of driving on a suspended license, Mennie said.

Additionally, Rojas has misdemeanor theft, battery and DUI convictions from California and misdemeanor domestic battery and DUI convictions from Georgia, Mennie said.

Rojas next appears in court on April 28.
