Elgin man charged with multiple drug felonies

Scenting a drug transaction, detectives from the Elgin police's narcotics unit conducted a traffic stop that led to the arrest Thursday of an Elgin man on a variety of narcotics charges.

Jason Melahn, 33, of the 1000 block of Crane Pointe, has been charged with manufacture and delivery of cannabis, possession of cannabis and possession of a controlled substance, all felonies.

Bond was set at $50,000, with 10 percent to apply, at a Kane County bond hearing Friday.

At approximately 4:24 p.m. Thursday, narcotics unit detectives witnessed what they suspected was a drug transaction in the 0-100 block of Greenridge Road and conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at Interstate 90 and Dundee Avenue.

Detectives said they spoke with Melahn, who was driving the vehicle and who indicated to detectives that he was transporting what he described as a large amount of cannabis in his vehicle.

Detectives recovered nine large bundles of cannabis with an approximate weight of 4,500 grams (approximately nine pounds). Detectives also recovered 18 pills of Hydrocodone, a controlled substance. Melahn was arrested on scene and transported to the Elgin Police Department.
