1 dead, 6 injured in limo crash on I-90 near Elgin
One person is dead and six others are injured after a limousine they were traveling in crashed and rolled over on eastbound Interstate 90 near Elgin Friday morning.
Police said the driver of the limousine was blinded by the sun shortly after 7 a.m. near Route 25. The driver was unable to see the traffic lane pattern and crashed into the end of the jay wall, causing the limousine to land on its roof with two people trapped inside.
Two of the six passengers had life-threatening injuries and were sent to Sherman Hospital in Elgin. A news release issued by the Elgin Fire Department stated one of those passengers died sometime before 10:45 a.m. Friday.
The driver and the four remaining passengers were transported to both Sherman Hospital and St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, all with nonlife threatening injuries.
The crash blocked two left lanes and jammed traffic from west of Randall Road to Route 25 for most of the morning.
The passengers, all from Wisconsin, included four men, ages 53 to 64, and two women, ages 53 and 61. They were identified by police as residents of Monona, Verona and Fitchburg. The 20-year-old male driver is from Janesville, Wis.
Illinois State Police are still on the scene conducting a crash investigation.
