Police: St. Charles man attacked Uber driver while vehicle was going 45 mph

A St. Charles man has been charged with attacking an Uber driver who avoided being stabbed and was not seriously hurt Sunday night.

Tyler Royer, 26, of the 1600 block of South Avalon Court, assaulted the 54-year-old driver in mid-ride to an undetermined address, police said.

Police said they were summoned at 10:37 p.m. for a report of a fight near a store at Randall Road and Main Street.

A "highly intoxicated" Royer was picked up by the driver in Campton Hills and fell asleep in the back seat before giving the address of his destination, police said. The driver was attacked after trying to awaken Royer, who grabbed the driver's face and pulled his head while the vehicle was traveling about 45 mph. Royer was also punching and kicking the inside of the vehicle, which almost veered off the road.

Police said the driver pulled into a parking lot where he tried to get Royer out of his car. Royer then pulled a 4-inch knife and made an unsuccessful attempt to stab the driver.

The driver told a store clerk to call 911. Officers captured Royer after he ran west from the store and threw the knife into a retention pond.

Royer was charged with aggravated assault, reckless conduct and two counts of battery, police said. He faces up to a year in jail if convicted. He's due in court March 29.

According to Kane County court records, Royer is supposed to be on probation until November 2017 after pleading guilty to possession of a controlled substance from a February 2015 arrest. If a judge rules Royer violated his probation he could be resentenced to more probation or up to three years in prison.

He also has previous arrests for mob action, retail theft, resisting arrest, and underage drinking, court records show.
