For much of the winter, the area enjoyed warmer-than-average weather. The snowfall fell short as well, with 30.1 inches through Friday - about five inches less than usual.

Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel reports on his blog that the area can expect a fairly normal April with an increased chance of warmer-than-average temperatures through June.

But the mild weather doesn't mean gardeners can plant earlier than usual, he said.

Bottom line: “Don't get fooled by this early warmth,” Angel said.
