Glenbard South edges Ridgewood in MSC

Other than the four Raiders running the 1,600-meter relay, Glenbard South's boys track squad crowded the third turn, filling the school's field house with noise.

Out of the last back stretch Jonathan Walker met them with a roar. Back from a long, successful basketball season Walker delivered the baton, the win and a Raiders repeat title at the Metro Suburban Conference Boys Track & Field Indoor Championship Saturday in Glen Ellyn.

"It's very, very pleasing, very pleasing," said Glenbard South coach Ronn Claussen as his team celebrated in the infield. "We've been working hard for this to get these guys to this point, and you can see that they're pretty happy with it."

Battling Ridgewood all afternoon, the relay win gave the Raiders 78 points to Ridgewood's 74. IC Catholic Prep, led by sprinters Jordan Rowell, Aaron Taylor and continued strong relays, finished third with 66 points.

Seventh-place Timothy Christian, Wheaton Academy and Fenton all had their moments. Such as when Wheaton Academy coach Chris Felinski told 1,600 runner Jonah Jones to pick it up and the junior simply sped to the lead for good. That's coaching.

With Wheaton Academy sprinter and Northwestern soccer recruit Ty Seager limited to a select outdoor schedule the Warriors stressed distance. Jacob Robleski joined Jones in the winners' circle, handily taking the 3,200 in 10 minutes, 17.34 seconds.

"I ran, like, 10:39 last year with people to push me, so I think that's just a good sign going into outdoor that I'm in a lot better shape than I was," he said.

Sprinters Greg Cazares and Jeremy Falconer led the Fenton effort; Timothy Christian's Xavier Ross finished second in both 55 low and high hurdles and also in triple jump at 41 feet, 8½ inches.

IC's Rowell, a six-time all-stater and still a junior, won the 55 dash, long jump and took second to Glenbard South's Walker in the 400, where a rolled ankle knocked Rowell out of the 200.

"Can't wait to see all these guys back during the outdoor season, especially the kid who beat me," he said.

But Raiders like Michael King, Andrew Sundberg, Nick D'Ambra, Joey Wood and Conner Howard earned a team win. Shot putter Taylor Sadkowski added nearly 4 feet to his personal record to win at 45 feet, 5½ inches.

"I wanted to hit 45, I hit 45 - finally," the junior said. "It felt great."

That was the consensus of the Raiders moshing in the infield.

"It's a good start to the year," Walker said, "and I hope for better things to come."
