Witness a prairie burn at Spring Valley

See the hotter side of the Schaumburg Park District's Spring Valley during the Sunset Fire and Picnic on the Prairie. A sight not to be missed, the burn is set for 6-8:30 p.m. April 2 at the Nature Center, 1111 E. Schaumburg Road, in Schaumburg.

A picnic behind the Nature Center will kick off the evening. Participants may bring their own food or purchase beverages and grilled food at the event. Early arrival is recommended as space is limited to 400 participants. Registration is not required.

"Burning the prairie is very important to the health of the landscape," said Mary Rice, education coordinator for Spring Valley. "It's a spectacular site to see, especially with the backdrop of early evening."

During the picnic, staff will explain why fire is beneficial to the health of natural areas and demonstrate how it's used to safely manage these areas. Trained staff will conduct the burn, which participants may view from a safe distance.

Admission is $3 per person or $12 per family of six. All ages are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Alternate rain date is April 9.
