Kehoe helps Fremd shut out New Trier
Fremd's softball team left 14 runners on base Thursday.
But the Vikings also left Winnetka with an impressive 8-0 victory over always-formidable New Trier in the nonconference test.
Sophomore Nikki Kehoe raised her record to 2-0 by firing a 4-hitter with 9 strikeouts and 1 walk.
Leading the offense for Fremd (2-0) were Abby Iuorio (2-for-3, 3 runs), Kylie Hess (2-for-3, 1 run, RBI), AnneMarie O'Sullivan (2-for-4, 3 runs) and Lexi D'Ambrosio (2-for-4, double).
Sophomore Jessica Mazur belted a 2-run, 1-out homer over the center field fence in the Vikes' 5-run fifth inning.
Conant 11, Cary-Grove 0 (6 inn): Lauren Grzelak (2-for-3, 2 run, RBI) belted a solo home run and a double as the Cougars opened their season with a nonconference win.
Other key hitters were Sam Gadowski (3-for-4, 4 RBI, triple, 1 run), Morgan Bihun (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and Makenna McCarthy (2-for-3, 2 runs, triple).
Sara Neuman pitched the first five innings for the win, striking out 10. Sara Pasbrig went the final inning.
Rolling Meadows 15, Highland Park 5 (5 inn.): Freshman Sara Benner and junior Amanda Elkins (2-for-4, 4 RBI) each belted 3-run homers as host Meadows improved to 2-0 with the nonconference win.
Other top hitters for the Mustangs were sophomore Mallory King (2-for-3, 2 RBI), junior Paige Connor (double, 2 RBI), freshman Caroline Slowik (double, RBI), freshman Elice Kowalski (1-for-1, double, RBI), freshman Emily Schmidt (double) and freshman Stephanie Thompson (1-for-1, RBI).
Lydia Schultz threw 3 scoreless innings to start the game and earned the win.
Maine West 5, Lake Zurich 3: Maine West won its first game at the Spring Fling to improve to 1-2 for the season.
Sophomore Allison Eby earned the win as freshman Gabriella Deema and senior Nicole Byerly each doubled for the winners.
The Warriors broke a 3-3 tie with 2 runs in the top of the seventh.
Zion-Benton 15, Hersey 3 (5 inn): Hersey dropped its final game the Spring Fling and stands at 1-2 for the season.
