We need truth in food labeling laws

The subject of genetically modified organisms has become an important debate as people are questioning the health and environmental impacts.

Regardless of one's opinion on GMOs, a related issue underscores the tension between the food industry and consumers; that is food transparency. The Grocery Manufacturers Association has spent millions of dollars to defeat labeling initiatives and keep consumers in the dark about GMOs in food products.

As a consumer, I care about the way my food is grown, and the impact it has on the environment. Also important is the contract of trust I enter into with food providers, when I make my food choices. Food companies have undermined that trust as they've fought on-package labeling; their assertions effectively state that my opinion does not matter. I am writing to insist that it does.

The "Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act" was designed to keep consumers in the dark about GMO content by preempting state and local labeling laws. Labeling at the Federal level would only be on a voluntary basis. The Act passed the House, and a companion bill is ready for a vote in the Senate. This is a slap in the face to consumers and voters. Laws passed at state and local levels should be respected.

Senators Richard Durbin and Mark Kirk, we need mandatory, clear, on-package GMO labeling. There is no reason to deny the right of consumers to know the content of their food. Please vote no on S.2609/HR 1599.
