Tribune Publishing wins bankruptcy auction to acquire California newspapers

CHICAGO - Tribune Publishing Co. won a bankruptcy auction to acquire Freedom Communications Inc., owners of The Orange County Register based in Santa Ana, California.

Tribune Publishing agreed to pay $56 million in cash for the business and its owned real estate in Santa Ana and Riverside, California. The company adds the Register and the Press-Enterprise of Riverside to Tribune's newspaper portfolio, which includes the Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times, San Diego Union-Trubune and Baltimore Sun.

"The successful bid for the business of Freedom Communications will allow The Orange County Register and the Press-Enterprise to continue providing a distinct local voice in their communities and deliver premium news and information to consumers across Southern California," said Justin Dearborn, CEO of Tribune Publishing.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions.
