Winning start for Wedl, Wauconda

Kayla Wedl picked up where she left off.

The UIC recruit fired a six-innning no-hitter and belted a 3-run homer, as Wauconda's softball team opened its season with an 11-0 victory over Woodstock on Tuesday.

Wedl, the captain of the Daily Herald Lake County All-Area team as a junior, lost her bid for a perfect game in the fifth when the Bulldogs mishandled a bunt to allow Woodstock's only baserunner. Wedl recorded 18 strikeouts, facing 19 batters.

Carthage-bound Brooke Sefcik opened the scoring with a 3-run homer in her first at-bat, finishing 2-for-3 in the contest. Wedl's home run came in the sixth and completed a 3-for-4 day with 4 RBI. Freshman Kayla Serio was 2-for-4 in her debut.

Hersey 6, Lake Zurich 4: At Barrington, the Bears dropped their season opener.

Lake Zurich's Jessica Puccinelli was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Tara Wilkes went 2-for-3 and knocked in a run. Freshman Stephanie Keefe was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI. Bears junior pitcher Lindsey DeLuga pitched 6 innings, allowing 3 earned runs. She struck out two and walked two.

Lake Zurich resumes Barrington's Spring Fling with a 4:30 p.m. game Wednesday against Deerfield.

Warren 7, Deerfield 6 (8 inn.): At Barrington, the Blue Devils needed extra innings to win their season opener.
