Authorities: Man beat 7-week-old baby boy

A 21-year-old man was being held in Kane County jail after being accused of beating a 7-week-old boy, Elgin police said.

Bail for Anthony B. Briden, of the 400 block of East Belmont Avenue, Elgin, was set at $300,000 Tuesday for two counts of aggravated battery to a person younger than 13, authorities said. He is next due in court April 1.

Elgin detectives were called March 9 to Delnor Hospital in Geneva regarding a child abuse investigation involving an infant, authorities said.

Hospital employees told detectives the severity of the injuries required the child to be transferred to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, and subsequently to the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital for treatment. Authorities said injuries to the child included multiple broken bones and abusive head trauma.

Briden, the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother, was interviewed by police and then charged Sunday, authorities said. He faces six to 30 years in prison if convicted.
