Mundelein voters want clerk to stay an elected office

Mundelein voters overwhelmingly want to continue electing their clerk.

With ballots in nearly all precincts counted, unofficial results showed 3,428 people opposed a proposal to make the clerk an appointed job, while only 1,937 people favored the plan.

Those totals don't include ballots cast early or by mail.

It's the second time in two years Mundelein residents have been asked if they wanted to turn the job into an appointed post, and the second time they've said no.

"The voters spoke very clearly today," Mayor Steve Lentz said. "The clerk's office will continue to be an elected post, and (it will) work hand-in-hand with village staff to accomplish its tasks efficiently and professionally."

Historically, Mundelein's clerk has been chosen by voters every four years. Duties include taking notes at village board meetings and handling various paperwork-related tasks at village hall.

The clerk's job used to be a full-time post, but it's been part-time since 2005.
