Defending champ Carmel Catholic begins with victory over Hersey

Class 2A defending state champion Carmel Catholic opened its girls soccer season with a 2-0 victory over visiting Hersey in the opening game of the Carmel quad in Mundelein on Monday afternoon.

The Corsairs received goals from Kathleen Graham and Vermont-bound Angela Salva, while while Haley Miller and Marquette-bound Erin Johnston each picked up assists.

Ray Krawzak earned his first victory with the girls after taking over for long-time coach John Halloran.

"Very happy to win the first and get off to a good start," Krawzak said. "The best thing I saw that we established possession and learned how to possess and control the ball from the get-go."

The remaining games in the quad include Carmel playing Von Stuben at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and Lake Forest on Thursday. Hersey takes on Lake Forest at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday and will meet Von Stueben at 5:15 p.m. Thursday.

"Defensively, I wasn't sure what to expect, with the youth," Hersey coach Darren Llewellyn said. "I was very impressed and we did a lot of shape work. We held our shape well. I thought we did better than I thought we would."
