New website connects students with local internships
The Golden Corridor Advanced Manufacturing Partnership has a new website to better educate youth about careers in advanced manufacturing.
The website, available at www.gcamp.org, offers information about manufacturing careers and paid student internships. The GCAMP site offers assistance to students and parents who will be making critical post-secondary education decisions in light of high costs of a traditional college education.
The best method for students to explore career fields is through work-based learning experiences like part-time jobs, internships, job-shadowing and apprenticeships. Often, what is not realized, is that along with students focused in math and science, students with interest in sales and marketing, engineering, human resources, IT, logistics, or transportation may find a home in the manufacturing field.
Manufacturing supports about 17.6 million jobs in the U.S. (one in six private sector jobs) and the Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte estimate that there will be a shortage of three million skilled manufacturing workers in the U.S. over the next 10 years.
GCAMP works with school districts 211 and 214 in helping students to secure engineering and manufacturing summer internships. The GCAMP website posts these opportunities in the spring.
More information about GCAMP and internship opportunities can be found at www.GCAMP.org.
