Aggravated kidnapping charge dropped against Spring Grove woman

An aggravated kidnapping charged was dropped against a Spring Grove woman in Lake County court Friday.

Judge Daniel Shanes also agreed to lower bail to $20,000 for Jori A. Urgo, 21, after Assistant State's Attorney Lauren Kalcheim-Rothenberg said new facts in the case prompted prosecutors to drop the charge.

Urgo will need to pay 10 percent of the amount to be released from Lake County jail, authorities said. Should she post bail, Urgo must be on home confinement and cannot consume alcohol or illegal drugs, Shanes said.

Urgo is charged in connection with the Dec. 27 attack of a woman in the North Jackson Drive residence Urgo shared with co-defendant Dvino E. Thomas, 30. Both have individually pleaded not guilty to aggravated kidnapping, unlawful restraint and aggravated battery.

Urgo still faces unlawful restraint and aggravated battery charges. Thomas is charged with aggravated kidnapping, unlawful restraint, aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. His bail remains $750,000. Both were given a May 9 trial date.

"New facts have arisen which cast doubt regarding some of the charges against this defendant. So we have dropped the charges," Kalcheim-Rothenberg said.

According to police, the victim was at the North Jackson Drive residence when she got into an argument with Thomas.

The argument escalated as Thomas and Urgo punched the victim, authorities said. She also was struck in the face with an object, authorities said.

The victim told authorities Thomas threatened her with a gun and said he'd kill her if she left the house or notified police, authorities said. He also took her car keys and refused to let her leave, according to the Lake County sheriff's office.

She was able to leave the residence Dec. 29, authorities said. She went to a hospital for treatment of a broken nose, a broken eye socket and multiple bruises.

She filed a report with the sheriff's office Jan. 8, officials said. Thomas was arrested at his house Jan. 11, and Urgo was picked up Jan. 12 in Ingleside.

Urgo and Thomas are due in court March 23.
