Sprinkler system contains fire at Elgin auto dealership

A sprinkler system limited the damage from a fire Sunday night at Biggers Chevrolet in Elgin, according to a news release.

Firefighters arrived at the dealership at 1385 E. Chicago St. about 7:20 p.m. to find flames visible from the roof.


Police and fire units were delayed getting into the property due to the presence of security gates, the news release said..

The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes. The damage was confined to a heating unit in the shop area, a spray booth and the roof covering, the news release said. Damage was estimated at $40,000. No vehicles were damaged during this event.

The fire is under investigation.
