Learn how to get kids excited about nonfiction books March 4

Nationally known children's literature expert Kathy Baxter will present the latest nonfiction books in a workshop from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, March 4, at Gail Borden Public Library, 270 N. Grove Ave., Elgin.

The workshop is the 2016 Kane County Regional Office of Education Institute Day for teachers and librarians.

Baxter feels that nonfiction can be the key to getting kids to read. Participants will be motivated and energized as they acquire a practical knowledge of books that she describes in this laughter-filled, fast-moving presentation.

Baxter is a teacher, librarian and a children's literature consultant who aims her book talk at public and school librarians, as well as elementary and middle school teachers. She discusses well-reviewed and kid-tested nonfiction titles for third through eighth grade readers. The books are all recently published. A list of the titles she will discuss will be given to attendees. Kathy also will share some useful tips for doing booktalks.

There will be an area map provided for a one-hour lunch outside of the library. Participants can arrive early to order a box lunch from In the Neighborhood Fresh Deli.

Teachers and librarians will receive 6 CEUs/CPDUs. Registration is required through the Kane County Regional Office of Education. Register at www.kaneroe.org/professional-development-2/institute-day-2016/.
