1. Smack dab in the middle of a long-running and seemingly unsolvable political feud is the last place most people want to end up. But David S. Olsen tells the Daily Herald he welcomes the challenge that comes with his appointment to the College of DuPage board.

2. Unusually high February winds raced through the suburbs Friday, ripping off roofing and leading to the collapse of a gas station canopy. The National Weather Service reported gusts exceeding 60 miles per hour in some places.

3. With just over a week to go before a scheduled strike, teachers and school board members in Lake Villa Elementary District 41 struck a tentative deal Saturday on a new, four-year contract. The agreement came after a 17-hour bargaining session that began Friday.

4. Another horse at Bartlett's Sunset Hill Farm has died and subsequently tested positive for the strain of equine herpes virus that affected eight horses last month, two of which were euthanized.

5. Volunteers have restored the luster to a memorial statue that serves as a tribute to a fallen Des Plaines firefighter and soon it will be back on display at the city's Thacker Street station, but this time it'll be kept inside to protect it from the elements.

8. A Downers Grove man charged with aggravated DUI in a crash that killed his lifelong best friend will avoid prison.

9. Buffalo Grove police have identified a middle-aged woman who died after apparently setting herself on fire Friday afternoon at a gas station, but are not releasing her name “in an effort to allow her family time to make appropriate notifications and arrangements.”

10. A 22-year-old Kenosha, Wisconsin woman died Saturday, a day after an SUV in which she was riding in near Libertyville crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a pickup truck. The SUV's driver, a 34-year-old woman from Salem, Wisconsin, died Friday.
