College of DuPage Welcomes New Trustee David S. Olsen

Downers Grove resident David S. Olsen (right) was sworn in as a new Trustee by the Honorable Judge Liam C. Brennan at the College of DuPage Feb. 18 regular Board of Trustees meeting.

Trustee Olsen, 27, will serve as the seventh trustee on the Board until the next consolidated election scheduled for April 2017. Olsen has served as a commissioner on the Downers Grove Village Council since 2013 and was named mayor pro tem of Downers Grove last year. He is currently an ethics and compliance analyst for commodities trading company BP Corporation North America, Inc.

"I am excited to be here tonight," Trustee Olsen said. "As a Board member, I will endeavor to work with everyone on each issue. I want to have colloquy with my colleagues and work in the best interests of this institution, regardless of any previous disagreements on policy or politics. We are here to provide oversight and encourage a full battery of due diligence. And we will not always agree. But I pledge to work in good faith with each member of this board."

College of DuPage Acting Interim President Joe Collins said Olsen is an "excellent addition" to the Board. "His background as student body president at the University of Illinois demonstrates a strong commitment to students," Collins said. "The College's most important focus - now and always is the success of our students."

Acting Board Chairman Deanne Mazzochi said, "We welcome David Olsen to the College of DuPage Board of Trustees. He is well respected throughout the district and will be a good and credible representative to the community. We ask only that Trustee Olsen exercise his best judgment for the good of the College"

With Trustee Olsen's addition on Feb. 19, the full Board got to work, proceeding to hold a six hour-meeting that addressed a wide range of College business and passing various College and Board policy initiatives. The Board is presently planning an aggressive meeting strategy to tackle a variety of issues in the next two weeks, including issues raised by the Higher Learning Commission. The Board also plans to set its next organizational meeting for early April, after the students select a new student trustee. To view a video of the meeting, please click here.
