Deadline is Feb 22 to vote on Schaumburg girl's Google contest design

Congratulations to third-grader Amelia Sanders of Dooley Elementary School in Schaumburg who was recently selected as the state of Illinois winner in the Doodle 4 Google 2015 Contest. She was recognized at an all-school, surprise assembly at Dooley on Friday, Feb. 5. Amelia's artwork titled "Animal Kingdom" is available on Google where people can vote until Monday, Feb. 22, on their favorite doodle. Google will choose the winner from among the five finalists with the most votes. The winner's artwork will be featured on the Google homepage. The winner will be announced March 21.

• Fremd High School seniors Jiamin Huang and Kevin Stevens both achieved a perfect score on their Advanced Placement (AP) Exams. Stevens took the Computer Science A exam and was one of 67 perfect scores. Huang took the Macroeconomics exam and was one of 22 perfect scores. The Advanced Placement Exam is scored on a five-point scale, with a five being equivalent of an "A" in the corresponding college course. Both students said preparing with practice tests, studying and utilizing all the resources available to them helped them achieve a perfect score. They also said Fremd teachers did a great job at preparing them for success.

• After a full day of head-to-head Pokémon Trading Card Game battles, David Modory of Des Plaines took first place in the Senior Division at the 2015/2016 Pokémon City Championships in Madison, Wisconsin. Along with the title and City Championship trophy, Modory earned valuable championship points that count toward a potential invitation to compete at the 2016 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco next summer.

• U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, a Chicago Democrat, nominated students from the Fifth Congressional District for admission to the U.S. Service Academies for the graduating Class of 2020. Fifth District nominees included: Mateuz Szelazek of Franklin Park, East Leyden High School, for admission to the U.S. Air Force Academy: and Alex Kania of Rosemont, Christian Liberty Academy, for admission to the U.S. Naval Academy. The admissions departments of the academies will make the final decision on acceptance.

• Collin Smith of Palatine participated in Cornell College's Pandemonium steel drum band, Calypso Singers, and Calypso horns tour to New Orleans during Mardi Gras. The 30-student contingent played their way down St. Charles Avenue in a float during four parades seen by more than a million people.
