Sing along with Playhouse 38's 'Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr.'

A new generation is discovering the catchy tunes that taught their parents about mathematics, grammar, and U.S. history - and they're bringing them to the stage.

Playhouse 38's production of "Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr." features the story of Tom, a young teacher whose daily duties unfold with a variety of fun and familiar songs such as "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly," "Conjunction Junction" and "I'm Just a Bill."

The cast comprises 16 actors ranging from age 6 to 13.

Performances are 7 p.m. Friday, 3 and 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19-21, at Sunset Community Center, 710 Western Ave., Geneva. Tickets are $10; for details, call (630) 232-4542 or visit genevaparks.org.

The Daily Herald caught up with director Meredith Vandre of Aurora to find out more about this production.

Q. How many plays have you directed for Playhouse 38?

Vandre. This is the second production I have directed for Playhouse 38. I have an assistant director, Shanna Lorenz who has been indispensable. She also choreographed our feature dances.

Q. Why did Playhouse 38 choose "Schoolhouse Rock Live Jr.?"

Vandre. We picked this play because it is a fun, fast-paced show that gives everyone in the cast an opportunity to shine through different solos.

4. What have you found most challenging - or rewarding - in putting on this production?

Vandre. The most challenging thing for me is also the most rewarding. You always have your kids that are new to theater. It's very difficult to act, or sing, or dance on its own but in musical theater you have to do all three at once. I love watching the kids blossom into little multi-tasking performers, but it can be challenging figuring out how to make it click for them.

Q. What part do you think audiences will like best in this show?

Vandre. I think that "Interplanet Janet" will be the favorite in this production. The kids love this song and we had a lot of great ideas for it.
