'Curious Incident,' 'Hedwig,' join Broadway in Chicago season

Broadway in Chicago announced Monday its 2016-2017 season will include the 2014 Tony Award-winning revival “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and 2015's Tony Award-winning play “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” in addition to the previously announced “Hamilton.”

“Hamilton,” by Lin-Manuel Miranda, launches its national tour Sept. 27 at the newly renamed PrivateBank Theatre at 18 W. Randolph St., Chicago.

Inspired by Ron Chernow's 2004 biography about the West Indies immigrant who became the nation's first treasury secretary, the show — rooted in hip-hop, R&B and pop — will likely be a big contender at this year's Tony Awards.

Simon Stephens' adaptation of Mark Haddon's novel “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time,” about a brilliant but socially challenged teenager looking into who killed his neighbor's dog, arrives Dec. 6 at the Oriental Theatre, 24 W. Randolph St., Chicago, for a three-week run.

R&B singer Deborah Cox stars in “The Bodyguard,” adapted from the 1992 film starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner about a former secret service agent hired to protect pop diva Rachel Marron from a stalker. The musical, which includes “I Will Always Love You” and “One Moment in Time,” runs Jan. 31, 2017, to Feb. 12, 2017, at the Oriental Theatre.

“Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” a rock musical by Northwestern University graduate John Cameron Mitchell about the transgender singer of a fictional German rock band, plays the Oriental Theatre March 7 to 19, 2017. The off-Broadway cult hit made its Broadway debut in 2014, where it picked up a Tony for best musical revival.

The season concludes with the previously announced “Aladdin,” which kicks off its world tour April 11, 2017, at Chicago's Cadillac Palace Theatre, 151 W. Randolph St. Based on the 1992 Disney movie, the show — among Broadway's top grossing for 2015 — features a score by composer Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice and book by Chad Beguelin.

Season subscriptions go on sale March 1, online at broadwayinchicago.com or by phone at (312) 977-1717. Subscriber benefits include discount tickets and parking among other perks. Individual tickets will go on sale at a later date.
