Elizabethan Faire at Discovery Museum celebrates Shakespeare

The Lake County Discovery Museum staged an Elizabethan Faire Sunday as it continues its celebration of the exhibit "First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare."

More than 300 people trudged out into the snow to watched performers from the Bristol Renaissance Faire in Wisconsin bring 16th century England to life at the museum, including Queen Elizabeth.

"It's just been really fun to share what we know about the First Folio," said Seleena Kuester, education manager, as she demonstrated a simple printing press model. "We can't be more grateful to the Bristol Renaissance Faire for bringing out their folks to partner with us."

Visitors enjoyed performances of Shakespeare's work, participated in hands-on crafts and enjoyed music of the period.

Prior to the start of the faire, Loyola University Professor Verna Foster presented "Shakespeare on Love, and the Afterlives of Shakespearean Lovers," depicting the relationship of Romeo and Juliet and other lovers in Shakespeare's works.

The First Folio! The Book That Gave Us Shakespeare exhibit, which includes a 1623 printing of Shakespeare's works, is on display now through Feb. 28 at the museum, 27277 N. Forest Preserve Road, Wauconda.
