Retired Indiana sheriff's deputy faces federal theft charge

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) - The FBI says a now-retired sheriff's deputy in Delaware County sold more than $8,000 in county-owned ammunition.

Arlan Johnson is a 29-year veteran of the department. The Star Press (http://tspne.ws/1QesxyI ) reports that the theft charge against him comes from federal prosecutors because the sheriff's department gets federal funding.

Authorities allege he sold the ammunition between January 2012 and last August, a month before he retired. They say that during a time that he racked up more than $100,000 in gambling losses.

According to the FBI, Johnson sold the ammunition to colleagues in the sheriff's office, two friends and the owner of a gun store in Muncie.

The Star Press reported that it was unable to reach him for comment.

Johnson could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
