Island Lake man dies in South Barrington crash

A 24-year-old man from Island Lake died in a single-vehicle crash in South Barrington early Saturday, police said.

Police were called just before 7 a.m. about a vehicle off the road along Route 59, about a half mile north of Route 72. While the caller had believed the vehicle was unoccupied, officers found the dead man behind the wheel of the blue Subaru Legacy, South Barrington Sgt. Sam Parma said.

The driver was traveling north on Route 59 when he crossed into the southbound lanes, veered off the road and struck several large trees, Parma said.

Police are awaiting the results of an autopsy and are withholding the man's name until family can be reached.

Route 59 was shut down for more than seven hours while police investigated. The Major Crash Assistance Team is helping with the ongoing investigation.
