GreenFields 'Pioneer Resident' witnesses growth of the community

"Some people call me the mayor because I've lived here so long and know everybody," said Lois Lindoerfer, a resident of GreenFields of Geneva. One of GreenFields' very first residents when the senior living community opened its doors exactly four years ago, Lois takes her role as one of the "pioneer residents" seriously. "It's my job to know everybody. I make a point of meeting the new people. That's what it's all about," she said.

Formerly of Elgin, Lois was widowed ten years ago. Both of her sons had moved out of the area and she decided that it was time to move into a retirement community. When she made that decision, she recalled, she would only consider those offering all levels of care. GreenFields, a complete continuum of care retirement community offers independent living, assisted living, memory support, skilled nursing and rehabilitation, all under one roof.

GreenFields was still under construction when Lois first made the decision that it was to be her new home. "When I made the decision to move here, I had only seen GreenFields on paper. All of the decisions I made came from having seen the model in downtown Geneva, and the plans on paper," she said. The actual building she said surpassed her expectations. "It's wonderful. When you just see a model, you can't picture it being so big and tall and beautiful!"

Lois has a lovely independent living apartment but has also experienced the services offered in skilled care. Having recently been hospitalized, Lois recovered in Briarwood Healthcare at GreenFields before returning to her own apartment. "They have taken wonderful care of me. The staff is great," she said. Upon returning to her own apartment, she looked forward to resuming her active lifestyle, participating in GreenFields many programs, and working out in the fitness center three times weekly. Before she moved to GreenFields, she recalled, she was getting bored and isolated living in her own home. 'Here, you can be as busy as you want. I've made lots of nice friends and there's always something to do," she said.

Lois reminisced about the changes having taken place in the four years since GreenFields opened. "There are many new residents, all of the time," she said. "And more and more activities to do here, all of the time. There are lots of classes and programs."

"It's sort of special being one of the pioneers, here," said Lois, adding that she's had the opportunity to witness and in fact be a part of the growth of the community. "It is wonderful here. I've appreciated every day that I've been here."
