Harriet Jacobs was born into slavery in 1813 and escaped to the north in 1842 after spending an arduous seven years hiding in her grandmother's attic. Later in her life she became an abolitionist speaker and self-published "Incidents in the Life of Slave Girl," her firsthand account of the traumas of slavery particularly for women and children.

The Literature to Life adaptation of Jacobs' vital and historic work premiered in 2006, and was commissioned by the New York Historical Society. Exploring the themes of resilience and survival, the stage adaptation culminates in Harriet Jacobs' powerful and moving experiences during the years she spent hiding in The Loophole, a small crawl space in her grandmother's attic.
