Olive Owl club makes 'Valentines for Veterans'

Respect is not lost on the Olive Owl Service Learning Club, and this month they showed their respect to the veterans of America with Valentine's Day cards.

Valentines for Veterans is a national effort that the Owl Service Learning Club at Olive-Mary Stitt Elementary School, Arlington Heights, participated in. The fifth-grade students took time out of their lunch hour to show respect for veterans by coloring, designing, writing, cutting and pasting homemade Valentine's Day cards that were delivered to the VA Hospital in North Chicago (Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center).

The Owl Service Learning Club tackles a new Character Counts trait each month and uses their time to promote that characteristic, while also raising awareness and funds for efforts all around the country.

Last month, the club collected coins for Charity: Waters and raised awareness around the community on the challenges one in six people face who do not have access to clean drinking water.

A few months back, the club honored the Character Counts theme of "caring" by initiating their Warm the Nest effort, where they promoted and collected lightly used winter wear to be donated to the homeless.
