With peak flu season, it's not too late to get your flu shot

The McHenry County Department of Health reminds county residents that it is not too late to get a flu shot. Flu season normally peaks between December and February. Cases often occur through May according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Although the prevalence of people in McHenry County testing positive for flu is still below last year's level, there has been a slight increase in those visiting local emergency departments with influenza-like illness. Throughout Illinois, there have been reports of localized influenza activity, including some deaths.

According to MCDH Administrator Mike Hill, "Flu vaccine is readily available at physician offices, clinics, retail pharmacies and many grocery stores throughout the County. People can also call the Health Department at (815) 334-4510 and request a flu shot."

Flu can make anyone, including the healthiest, seriously ill. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Consult your physician if you think you have the flu.

Even if you don't develop symptoms yourself, you can still pass the virus to others like pregnant women, young children, those with compromised immune systems (from conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease) and people 65 and older. If you have not gotten the flu shot, the best protection for yourself and others is to practice the three C's -- clean your hands, cover your cough and contain your germs by staying home when sick.
