Former U of Illinois athletic director received fast payout

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Former University of Illinois athletic director Mike Thomas is off the school's payroll and has been since not long after he was fired.

Thomas received the $2.5 million payout following 11 days after his Nov. 9 firing.

Coaches and others in athletic departments who receive buyouts after losing jobs often are paid that money over periods of years.

But university spokeswoman Robin Kaler told The News-Gazette in Champaign (http://bit.ly/1X8tQ1B ) that since Thomas was not fired for cause his contract called for him to be paid off within 60 days.

Interim Chancellor Barbara Wilson said when she fired Thomas that he had done nothing wrong.

The university has not yet hired a replacement for Thomas.
