The Latest: Browns say 2016 training camp will be in Berea

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - The Latest on the Cleveland Browns plans to move their summer training camp to Columbus (all times local):

2:30 p.m.

The Cleveland Browns say they will conduct their 2016 training camp at their Berea facility but they've confirmed plans to eventually hold camp at a new facility in Columbus.

A statement released by the team Thursday says moving the training camp to central Ohio would be a "positive," adding that nearly a dozen NFL teams already hold training camp away from their main facilities.

A Columbus development group and the Browns have asked the state to help pay $5 million to build a practice facility at Ohio State University. The request for the money was made in the biennial state capital improvements bill that will be proposed in the next few months.

The team says it's in discussion with Columbus leaders about the new facility. Officials say a site hasn't been chosen.

The Cleveland Browns and a Columbus group have asked the state to help pay $5 million to build a practice facility for the Browns at Ohio State University so the team can move its summer training camp.

Documents obtained by The Columbus Dispatch (bit.ly/1TGtcso) show the Columbus Partnership made the request for the money in the biennial state capital improvements bill that will be proposed in the next few months.

The language in the request is vague about the reason for the project. But several people, including the president of the partnership, have confirmed that it's a facility for the Browns to bring their camp to Columbus.

The team currently holds its training camp at its facility in the Cleveland suburb of Berea.

The idea is drawing backlash in Cleveland.
